Films
The Cypriot film archive was created in 1989 after a decision of the Council of Ministers which assigned the task of organising and running it to the Press and Information Office. Thus the Section of Audio-Visual Productions was created.
The archive collection includes approximately 200 films made between 1927 and 2008. The main bulk of the collection comprises fiction films, documentaries and short films shot between 1994 and 2002. A second part of the archive is composed of short films used by the British authorities for educational reasons and a third part includes films by the Cyprus Broadcast Corporation, mainly documentaries, used in various enlightenment campaigns in the past.
The Audio-Visual Productions Section of the PIO has developed a strong activity which entails, besides the digitisation project, the tracking down of old Cypriot films, the digitisation and preservation of approximately 150 hours of film covering the period 1942 – 2003 and the filming of the entire island – an innovative project according to European standards.
